Pre-Conference Conference Proceedings
SETE 2002 is a joint conference of The Systems Engineering Society of Australia (SESA), and The International Test and Evaluation Society (ITEA).   SESA, a Technical Society of IEAust was established in 1995 to support systems engineering in Australia and is also affiliated with International Council of Systems Engineering (INCOSE).  ITEA, a not-for-profit international association founded in 1980 aims to further the development and exchange of information in the fields of test and evaluation.  SETE 2002 is the third joint conference held by the societies and follows the success of SETE 2000 held in Brisbane and INCOSE 2001 in Melbourne..

The theme of SETE 2002 is At the Forefront of System Engineering with the technical theme focusing on a 5 layered model proposed by Prof. Derek K Hitchins to achieve world class systems engineering from product level (layer 1) to socio economic (layer 5) systems.  Further information on this model can be found http://www.hitchins.co.uk/5layer.html

The Conference program integrates the systems engineering and test & evaluation fields in a combination of plenary sessions, panels, technical papers and exhibits. The program is expected to include papers in at least the following areas:

Systems Engineering:
  • Systems Engineering Applications
  • Selling Systems Engineering
  • Measurement
  • Modeling and Tools
  • Systems Engineering Management
  • Processes and Methods
  • Software Engineering
  • Education and Training
Test & Evaluation:
  • T&E Visions of the Future
  • Critical Technologies (Instrumentation, Modeling, Simulation)
  • Measures of Effectiveness (MOEs)
  • The Planning and Management of T&E
  • T&E Investment Planning
  • Virtual T&E
  • The Design of Experiments
  • Error Budgeting

Message from the SESA President

Dear Colleagues,

I want to recommend to you, this year’s SETE Conference which offers the best in Systems Engineering and Test & Evaluation thinking.  Knowing the demands that are placed on Systems Engineers, the SETE 2002 program has been compacted into two days, in the expectation that many of you will be able to get approval to attend for this short period of time.

I am pleased that the International Test and Evaluation Association are joining with SESA to present SETE 2002. This partnership allows us to opportunity to provide greater depth in the technical program of the Conference in the areas of T&E, and we look forward to ITEA’s continued involvement in this conference.

With some 30 papers in two streams covering the gamut of systems areas including requirements, risks, modelling, metrics, testing, enterprise systems, and systems architecting, plus panel discussions and a variety of SE tool vendors and exhibitors. SETE 2002 provides you with the chance to learn from systems engineering experts. I am confident that you will be eager to share this new knowledge and experience within your company and your fellow employees.  For it is through such sharing that we are able to foster the understanding, practice, and advancement of Systems Engineering. It is important that we continue the process of sharing information needed to solve the difficult problems facing us in the 21st Century. SETE 2002 is a great opportunity to do this in a productive and enjoyable manner.

I look forward to meeting you at SETE 2002 in Sydney on 29th and 30th October.
